DELTA DIALOGUES
Mississippi Delta, United States
featured in GROUND UP, UC Berkeley Student Journal
This studio considered strategies for regional planning in the alluvial plain that runs north-south from Memphis, Tennessee to Natchez, Mississippi. Team of three involved in study of the infrastructural systems and cultural identity of the Mississippi Delta.
The Delta Region was once all bottomland hardwood forests, the small remnants of which can be found along some bayou edges. Soils rich from frequent sediment deposits and the organic litter of the bottomlands have made crops very successful here since the influx of planters in the 1800s. The proximity of the Mississippi River and the demands of the railroads to the west encouraged the boom in production in both agriculture and timber.
Despite a rich cultural heritage of music, food, and film, the region has high poverty and low standards of living. This study focuses on current issues and potential strategies for addressing current difficulties.
